It may come a surprise to – dare I say – most British citizens, that their fellow British Muslims donated 20 times more to charities in the UK?
During Ramadan, the British Muslim community raise £100 million during that month alone, according to TV show, Young, British and Muslim.
That's equivalent to each Muslim donating £371 per year, compared to the average £18 each Briton of any faith contributed.
Ramadan is not just a time for fasting, it's also big on giving. It's a time of "total and radical transformation" says Shelina Janmohamed, author of Generation M: Young Muslims Changing the World, and the Vice President of Ogilvy Noor, an Islamic branding consultancy.
According to Jammohamed, who was on the show, 36 percent of Muslims do more charity, and nearly two thirds of British Muslims are giving to charities in this Holy Month.
Another guest on the show, Omar Salha, founder of social enterprise Ramadan Tent Project – which runs an annual Open Iftaar initiative for the homeless and people of all faiths – says they serve 365 people of all faiths a meal every night for the whole month in Central London.
If non-Muslim Britons knew how much their Muslim counterparts donated, would interfaith change for the better? That was a question asked on the show and the answer was yes.
