If you're the type of person who enjoys exploring a new city with many people led around by someone holding a flag, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, if the idea of being a tourist makes you want to hide behind a double-decker bus, then you are in the right place.

Both options have their benefits and drawbacks but living like a local is going to give you the vacation and experience you have always wanted. Let's breakdown why:

Traveling like a tourist

  • You need to visit every monument and park: If it's mentioned on TripAdvisor, you are going to be there whether you are interested in it or not.
  • Your schedule is packed the whole day. You are going to let yourself have just enough time for dinner at a tourist trap that's probably really expensive too.
  • You are going to see all the sights but not take them in. You are telling yourself, "I need to be enjoying this, it is the Mona Lisa after all."

Traveling like a local

  • You start your day with a coffee at a local cafe, sit back and enjoy watching people. You take in all the different sights and see what the locals are doing. You never know, you could end up with excellent tips or the best restaurants and places to visit.
  • You go to a place that YOU find interesting to visit – a nearby town, museum, or even ask a local to recommend somewhere to go. The main thing here is finding a unique and interesting place, not an endless long list of sites that you have to check off. Do you like gardens? How about spending an afternoon visiting a botanical garden and reading your favorite book there?
  • You do things that are out of your comfort zone. Experience the street food… Go on a hike on top of a mountain or cliff, even if you're scared of heights. Not only does this make your trip more memorable, but you're also going to be proud of yourself.

Here are some tips that can help you explore your destination as a local:
