The Rules on Bags You Can Take Through DXB Are Changing

If you were planning on leaving from DXB with that bag that's perfect for fitting everything in it, you may have to think again. New baggage regulations have been implemented to help improve services for all passengers moving through the Dubai International Airport and a new rule says that bags must have at least one flat surface. It could rule out soft duffels, bags with long straps, bubble wrapped parcels and other and odd-shaped luggage.

To refresh your mind, here's a list of the rules and regulations you need to know so that you don't waste your time arguing, cajoling or fuming at the check in personnel once you (finally) reach the counter.

  1. Do not carry liquids over 100ml in your hand luggage.
  2. Place containers in clear, resealable plastic bags.
  3. Put the resealable bag in your hand luggage.
  4. Generally, two pieces of baggage are allowed for international travel, with the total weight not exceeding 32kg. However, this may vary by airline and fare type. Check with your airline before you fly.
  5. Baggage larger than 90cm long, 75cm high and 60cm wide, or that does not have a single flat surface, will need to be checked in at the oversized baggage counter. Please allow extra time to check-in oversize baggage.
  6. Excess baggage must be repacked. Excess baggage fees typically apply.
  7. Bags must have at least one flat surface.

Given recent changes to policy, in cases of highly suspicious packed goods, the General Department of Airport Security (GDAS) now has the authority to open bags in order to identify and remove these items without the passenger present and that any associated damage is not the liability of GDAS.
