Human Rights Day is observed globally on December 10 each year, but this year's celebration is particularly historic.
Human Rights Day honors the foundational human rights document, which marks its 70th anniversary next year, and for the next 12 months, the UN is asking people to add their voice to the campaign.
Since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, "human rights have been one of the three pillars of the United Nations, along with peace and development," said Secretary-General António Guterres in his message for Human Rights Day.
Now, for the next year, the UN wants people around the world to chime in and add their voice by recording an article from the Universal Declaration for Human Rights in their native language.
"The Add your voice project is a multilingual, collaborative effort of the United Nations (Department of Public Information and the Human Rights Office), Universal Human Rights Initiative (UHRI), and Showbox, a video-creation platform. The goal of our project is to raise awareness about the UDHR by creating a technology-enabled educational tool that can be used by anyone, anywhere in the world," the official site explains.
You can record yourself online in any of the 135 languages listed on the site, upload your video, and ultimately share it on social media. The aim of the project is to "broaden access to the Declaration to new audiences, including the millions of illiterate or visually impaired."
